English Language Usage


English Language Usage -
  • Annalise will continue to be supported as she independently pursues her goal of acquiring more sophisticated English language skills.  
  • Annalise continues to enjoy a wide range of conversation and exploration of her native tongue.  Her natural proclivity and passion for language offers her:
  •  an innate understanding of many grammatical concepts;
  •  a highly sophisticated vocabulary rich in abstract concepts;
  •  a fascination with dictionaries indexes, and other resources;
  •  and a great reduction in the number of generalized tenses, prefixes, and suffixes.
  • She will be exposed to English in many written and spoken forms.  She will have the opportunity to converse with a wide variety of English speakers of diverse ages, including those for whom English is a  second language.
  • Annalise continues to seek out conversations with a variety of people of various ages, covering diverse topics.
  •  Highlights of this quarter include conversing in English with native speakers of French and Taiwanese, during the Northeast Unschooling Conference.
  • As Annalise's reading has become fluent, she is exploring assorted written expressive language forms, including poetry, prose, and nonfiction. 
  • Annalise increasingly enjoys wordplay.  She is especially fond of paradoxes and metaphor, and has begun to experiment with and understand puns.
  • Her interest in sentence structure; parts of speech; prefixes, suffixes;word roots and origins; and vocabulary will be encouraged and nurtured.
  • As indicated above, Annalise has an increasingly sophisticated understanding of English.  
  • Her vocabulary is rich and diverse.
  • She enjoys learning about word roots and the languages that gave birth to ours.
  • She continues to develop her understanding of various common (and sometimes not so common) prefixes and suffixes.  As her understanding grows, so does her ability to apply them appropriately.
  • We will continue to speak with her on a level in keeping with her natural talent for verbal expression.
  • As Annalise's ability to communicate verbally approaches adult levels, she requires a commeasurate  level of input from those around her.  She has little patience for being spoken down to, or the particular tone of voice many adults use in attempting to conduct scripted surface exchanges with her.
  • Annalise wants to be engaged as a person, and she is well able to express this. 
  • In our home, and amongst out friends, we communicate with Annalise at a natural and unscripted level.  
  • She is very adept at asking questions that will help her understand words or concepts she does not initially understand.
  • Her parents will facilitate by providing opportunities and excursions that allow Annalise to interact with  many written and spoken forms of English; by providing access to a wide variety of print and online English language resources; by engaging with Annalise in involved conversations; by answering questions and offering advice as she requests; and by supplying a vocabulary-rich learning and living environment.
  • Annalise has been offered a wide variety of opportunities this quarter.
  • She enjoyed the ability to read most things she attempts, and had explored widely - reading periodicals, newspapers,  Bibles, dictionaries, encyclopedias, poetry, and prose.
  • She completed all the games in the Shepard's Language section, including:
  • Grammar
  • Punctuation
  • Capitalization
  • Possessives
  • Nouns
  • Verbs
  • Adverbs
  • Annalise has traveled to New Jersey and Massachusetts during this quarter, and spoken with a wide range of English speakers.  
  • She has encountered and explored language abundantly in her environment.
  • She has had answers to her frequent questions, and assistance as she desires in locating resources.
