Arithmetic

Arithmetic -
  • Annalise will continue to be supported as she deepens her independent explorations of mathematical concepts.
  • Annalise has been supported as she increases her understanding of mathematical concepts including:
  • Counting money for value
  • Understanding written fractions
  • Increasing her understanding of forms of measurement
  • Reading clocks and calendars
  • The four basic operations
  • Angles and geometric concepts
  • Square roots
  • Building in two and three dimensions
  • Discussing exchange rates (yen, pounds, pesos)
  • Timelines, graphs, and charts for reading
  • She will continue to have free access to manipulatives, real-life experiencesonline games and lessons,  and parental support to answer questions and offer suggestion as she explores.
  • Annalise has explored various maniupulatives, including:
  • Abacus
  • Measuring tapes and rulers
  • Protractor and compass
  • Pattern blocks and tangrams
  • Cuisennaire rods
  • Legos
  • Train tracks
  • Puzzles
  • Stacking firewood
  • Money of various denominations and from various countries
  • Clocks, calendars, graphs, charts, and timelines
  • Annalise spent  a considerable amount of time exploring mathematical concepts while playing  Animal Crossing:
  • The four basic operations.
  • Budgeting
  • Calculating and comparing purchase and sale prices.
  • Earning money in various ways: harvesting, gathering, fishing, treasure hunting, selling. Also bartering.
  • Paying off a succession of home mortgages.
  • Working through a series of jobs.
  • Graph and grid reading.
  • Annalise has had practical experience with various real-life mathematical endeavors this quarter, including:
  • Budgeting her allowance, and making purchases within prescribed limits.
  • Using  and creating clocks and calendars to independently count down to an anticipated event.
  • Building in two and three dimensions.
  • Reading product labels and computing serving sizes and amounts of nutritional components she wishes to enhance in her diet.
  • Counting rhythm and measures as she played Donkey Konga.
  • Using mathematical concepts for her own purposes and needs.
  • Annalise has had parental support available when and as she chooses.
  • Her parents will continue to facilitate by providing many real-life and virtual opportunities for Annalise  to hone and broaden her understanding of  the four basic mathematical functions (addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division) money, fractions, and percentages; geometry; and square roots; as well as offering opportunities for her to continue strengthening her ability to perform mathematical operations she is already familiar with.
  • Annalise has had her parents' support as she independently expanded her capacity for performing mathematical functions and understanding throughout this quarter.  Assistance, materials, and information were supplied as requested.

  • She will be included in family budget discussions in greater depth, and will continue to have a weekly allowance and guidance as needed in budgeting it.
  • As Annalise becomes more able to understand the concepts involved, she has become much more interested in participating in budget discussions and assisting in making decisions on family purchases.
