2012-2013 IHIP for Annalise Burton, age 8, DOB 7/8/04, Grade 3

Unless otherwise noted, Annalise's parents, Shannon and James Burton, will be facilitating her learning throughout the 2012-2013school year.

I affirm that my child, Annalise Burton, will be meeting the compulsory education requirements of Education Law.

English Language Arts (ELA) - 

Reading -
  • Annalise will continue to be given time and freedom to pursue her own reading interests, as well as many resources for expanding her maturing independent reading skills, both in print and online.  
  • We will continue to read as a family, and to support her efforts at applying context, phonics, prompts, references, and other reading aides as she builds her reading vocabulary.  
  • She will continue to be supported as she explores what has been read through discussion, critical review of ideas, cross-referencing, alternate storyline creation, play, art, and other forms of experimentation as she desires.  
  • She will continue to have the freedom to explore all the many resources available in our home of passionate readers, as well as visits to bookstores, libraries, and many other venues where her thirst for new reading materials can be nurtured, and her horizons broadened.
  • Her parents will facilitate by providing ample resources and experiences to support Annalise's love of reading, by being available to read with her and to discuss and explore what has been read, answering her questions, providing assistance as needed., and allowing her time, space, and materials for independent exploration.

Writing and Spelling  -
  • Annalise will continue to be provided with ample opportunities to explore her rapidly increasing writing and spelling skills, both in print and online.
  • She will have free access to a variety of media for creating written notes, cards, stories, and online postings, as well as access to home and public libraries, including online and print dictionary resources.
  • Her passion for creating complex verbal storylines and creating books with words and illustrations will be fully supported, and she will be given ample time to explore these and related pursuits independently.
  • Her parents will facilitate by providing the materials and time for free exploration, by answering questions and offering advice as requested, and through discussions that help Annalise clarify what she is trying to express via written words, as needed.

English Language Usage -
  • Annalise will continue to be supported as she independently pursues her goal of acquiring more sophisticated English language skills.  
  • She will be exposed to English in many written and spoken forms.  She will have the opportunity to converse with a wide variety of English speakers of diverse ages, including those for whom English is a second language.
  • Her interest in sentence structure; parts of speech; prefixes, suffixes;word roots and origins; and vocabulary will be encouraged and nurtured.
  •  We will continue to speak with her on a level in keeping with her natural talent for verbal expression.
  • Her parents will facilitate by providing opportunities and excursions that allow Annalise to interact with many written and spoken forms of English; by providing access to a wide variety of print and online English language resources; by engaging with Annalise in involved conversations; by answering questions and offering advice as she requests; and by supplying a vocabulary-rich learning and living environment.

Resources may include, but are not limited to -

  • television and computer programming;
  • a wide array of materials for reading and writing;
  • environmental resources;
  • written and spoken English in many forms;

Arithmetic -

  • Annalise will continue to be supported as she deepens her independent explorations of mathematical concepts.
  •  She will continue to have free access to manipulatives, real-life experiences,online games and lessons, and parental support to answer questions and offer suggestion as she explores.  
  • Her parents will continue to facilitate by providing many real-life and virtual opportunities for Annalise to hone and broaden her understanding of  the four basic mathematical functions (addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division) money, fractions, and percentages; geometry; and square roots; as well as offering opportunities for her to continue strengthening her ability to perform mathematical operations she is already familiar with.   
  • She will be included in family budget discussions in greater depth, and will continue to have a weekly allowance and guidance as needed in budgeting it.  

Resources may include, but are not limited to -
  • Access to a wide variety of manipulatives;
  • money; clocks; calendars; calculators and abacus;
  • pen and paper for creating and calculating equations;
  • diverse measuring devices;
  • allowance and guidance in budgeting;
  • computer games and programs;

Sciences -

  • Annalise will continue to be supported as she indulges her myriad scientific passions, which include: anatomy and genetics; evolution; ecology and animal ecosystems; venomous snakes and insects; geology; and weather.
  • Annalise will be presented with other scientific topics and concepts through excursions, activities, television programming, online and print resources, and real life opportunities to explore her deepening scientific awareness.
  • She will have ample time to explore as deeply as she wishes. 
Her parents will facilitate these explorations by providing time, space, materials, home and public libraries, programming, excursions, and conversation relevant to her discoveries and experimentation.Resources may include, but are not limited to -
  • Annalise will continue to have the use of a wide range of materials and be given time and space for her independent science explorations;
  • access to home and public libraries;
  • computer and television programming;
  • search engines;
  • games;
  • animals and plants;
  • exposure to various ecosystems;
  • museums and exhibits;
  • parent facilitators.


Social Sciences

United States History -
  • Annalise  will be supported in her continuing explorations of local, state, and United States history, and how this history pertains to our current time, and connects to the global climate.
  • She will have access to home and public libraries;
  • living history exhibits and events;
  • opportunities to visit historical sites and museums;
  • free access to television and computer programs and games, such as Carmen Sandiego's Great Chase Through Time, Crayola First Ladies, and America; The Story of Us;
  • art and music from assorted periods in history;
  • literary and news sources, including important writings and documents;
  • and support in pursuing her personal interests and efforts, including  Magic Tree House  and All of a Kind Family books,and American Girl products. 
  • She will be encouraged to ask questions and suggest ideas for family history conversations, activities, and travels.  

Patriotism and Citizenship -
  • Annalise will continue to be invited to vote with her parents;
  • will be offered access to coverage of local, state, and national political campaigns as she wishes;
  • will be given the opportunity to watch the summer Olympic games, and discuss;
  • will be given freedom to explore government and to form her own political views;
  • will be given access to important state and national documents, attitudes, and symbols;
  • and will be included in discussions of ethics; moral codes and mores; and civil rights and responsibilities.
  • We will continue to discuss our nation's rituals; explore the meanings behind traditions. patriotic music, speeches, and symbols; and visit locations important to our nation's growth.

Geography -
  • Annalise's interest in geography will be nurtured as she continues her guided and independent explorations in this area.
  • She will continue to be afforded free access to assorted maps, globes,and atlases, and time to explore them and create conversation, art, and play surrounding them. 
  • We will continue exploring such topics as latitude and longitude; scale; fault lines; legends; time zones; and locations and geographic characteristics of counties, states, countries and continents.
  • As a family, we enjoy travel, and will continue to plan and take trips throughout the Northeastern United States, and perhaps venture further afield as comfort levels allow.
  • We will explore our destinations through various print and online sources; explore potential travel itineraries; plot mileage and consider geographic features.
  • We will continue physically exploring our national geography through travel, hiking, biking, and exploring museums and attractions along the way, as well as planning and mapping out itinerary.

Resources may include, but are not limited to:

  • Maps, globes, atlases, and exhibits;
  • compasses and other navigational tools;
  • free access to home and public libraries, bookstores, online geography sites and applications;
  • computer and television programming;

Visual Arts -
  • Annalise will continue to be supported as she creates and explores visual art in as many forms as she wishes.
  •  As a family, we will continue to embrace and nurture her appreciation for visual art by attending exhibits, shows, funshops, performances, and galleries;
  • by continuing to provide a wide range of materials for artistic expression;
  • by affording her free access to home and public libraries to explore art as she chooses;
  • by engaging in conversations with her about the art she has viewed or created;
  • by providing opportunities to observe craftspeople at work;
  • and by providing her with opportunities to find artistic performances and programming via television and computers, and sharing links to sites we enjoyed.

  • Materials for a diverse range of artistic expressions;
  • ample time and space for free creative expression;
  • free access to home and public libraries;
  • free access to computer games and programming;

Music -

  • Annalise will continue to be supported as she explores a diverse range of musical expression via live and recorded performances.
  • She will have free access to:
  • a variety of instruments and sheet music;
  • online and television music applications and programs;
  • opportunities to interact with musicians;
  • conversations regarding musical techniques and principles;
  • experimentation with voice;
  • demonstrations of such techniques as scales, harmony, projection, breathing, pitch, etc.; and opportunities to compose music through a variety of media.

Foreign Language Arts (FLA) -

  • Annalise will continue to be supported as she further explores her fascination with  languages beyond English through:
  • continued exposure to native speakers;
  • noting and discussing foreign languages as they appear in our daily activities, word roots, music, and games;
  • live and recorded television and radio programming;
  • family conversation;
  • activities and events;
  • opportunities to explore written languages through such programs as Google Translate , Babelfish, Livemocha, and Rosetta Stone Japanese.
  • literature, subtitles, and dictionaries, such as Hey, Andrew! Teach Me Some Greek!;
  • opportunities to attend events that encompass or embrace other languages and cultures.

Resources may include but are not limited to:
  • Visits to venues where other languages are spoken;
  • Television, radio, and computer resources;
  • Home and public library access;
  • Environmental exposure to other languages;

Health and Safety -

  • Annalise will continue to be supported as she deepens her understanding of health and safety.  
  • We will continue to:
  • live a life rich in varied experiences;
  • have ongoing discussions regarding safety concerns, particularly as concerns traffic, fire, water, stranger, and bicycle safety;
  • review and discuss regulations and fire and arson prevention and safety, as they arise through our day-to-day activities;
  • attend special events, such as fire station open houses, exhibits, and events such as Journey Through the Body;
  • have free access to television, computer, and online games and programs that support her further health and safety learning.
  • learn more about how nutrition, sleep/wake cycles, hygiene, meditation, and exercise choices can affect her overall health;
  • have daily opportunities to make informed choices on matters that will affect her own health and safety with parental support and guidance.  
  • As she continues to become more capable, Annalise will have greater responsibility for and freedom in making these decisions.  
  • As her body is maturing, we will discuss puberty and the changes it brings in greater detail, throughout the course of our day-to-day living.
  • As a family, we will address such topics as the abuse of drugs, the dangers of alcohol and tobacco use, and sexual safety.

Resources may include but are not limited to:  
  • Free access to home and public libraries;
  • television and computer games and programming;
  • online resources;
  • nutritional labels and resources;
  • exercise and safety equipment; events, exhibits, and activities;
  • frequent opportunities to explore and practice health and safety principles through the activities of day-to-day living;

Physical Education -

  • Annalise  will continue to be supported as she pursues a variety of physical activities and personal fitness goals.  
  • Her parents will facilitate these pursuits by :
  • providing relevant equipment;
  • offering opportunities to explore new individual and group activities;
  • family play;
  • by providing resources for deeper and more diverse learning and activities;
  • through ongoing discussion of each family member's fitness goals and the steps we are each taking to attain them.

Resources may include but are not limited to -
  • Family YMCA membership;
  • sports and safety equipment; events, activities, exhibits, and programs that support awareness and practice of physical education principles;
  • an active family lifestyle;
  • Home maintenance and improvement projects;
  • Home and yard tending activities;
  • ample time to pursue independent physical fitness goals;
  • ongoing discussion of each family member's goals and actions toward those goals;
  • parent facilitators.

Quarterly Reports 

Our 2012-2013 reporting year will be divided as follows:

First Quarter -       August 1, 2012 - October 31, 2012
Second Quarter -   November 1, 2012 - January 31, 2013
Third Quarter -       February 1, 2013 - April 30, 2013
Fourth Quarter -     May 1, 2013 - July 31, 2013

Quarterly reports will be submitted on or before:

First Quarter -       December 1, 2012
Second Quarter -  March 1, 2013
Third Quarter -      June 1, 2013
Fourth Quarter -    September 1, 2013
